We fell in love with the old, abandoned SnoCraft/Tubbs snowshoe factory at 10 Tannery Street during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic. As co-founders of Lights Out Art Gallery, we naturally imagined a space full of creativity and art, a space that would serve as home to Lights Out's work and future shows, as well as a hub for the community to gather, create and innovate.

Founded in 1906, the Tubbs factory was famous for producing high-quality snowshoes, skis and sleds, even outfitting the famed Robert Peary polar expeditions, leading to Norway being hailed as the 'Snowshoe Capital of the World.'"

We bought the building in February 2022 and immediately began working to make the dream a reality.  Shortly thereafter, Creative Norway joined the coalition to move the work forward, nicknaming the project Tannery Street. We are still in the early stages of renovation, but already folks are using the space again – for dancing, music, art display, and offices.

Our plan for Tannery Street is to tap into the collaborative community and creative spirit that already makes Norway special in the Western Foothills. The buildings are 13,000 square feet combined and sit on almost a full acre in downtown Norway. The plan is to renovate the buildings over stages, converting the space into a community hub and arts center, including a dance studio, a co-working office space, a shared makers’ space, private artist’s studios, an outside community patio area, and an art gallery and flex show-space. The downtown location makes Tannery Street a great hub to support retail and restaurants.
